I tell the story of racing blind for Team USA — and what it looks like to work at something hard when the conditions aren’t perfect.

I’ve spoken at schools and churches, and my story has been covered by U.S. Paralympics Swimming, Swimming World, WRAL News, Spectrum News, and the Water Prairie Chronicles podcast. Every talk gets adapted to the audience in front of me, whether that’s a gym full of middle schoolers or a Sunday congregation.

What I talk about

• Racing blind. How a tapper tells me where the wall is, why I follow the lane line to swim straight, and what it takes to trust people completely at full speed.
• The road to Team USA. From watching the 2016 Paralympic Trials to Santiago, Paris, and the world record in the S11 100m backstroke.
• Racing sick in Paris. An E. coli infection weeks before the Games, the weight loss that came with it, and getting back on the blocks anyway.
